what is an invasive species?
00:11
an invasive species is any kind of living organism that is not native to an ecosystem and causes harm.
00:14
they harm either the environment, the economy, or even human health.
00:20
did you know?
00:23
according to the national wildlife federation, around 42% of threatened/endangered species are at risk due to invasive species.
00:30
how are invasive species spread?
00:34
invasive species are primarily spread by human activities, usually unintentionally -- all the goods we use move around the world swiftly, and they often transfer uninvited species with them.
00:40
ships could carry aquatic organisms in their propellers or ballast water.
00:43
insects can sneak into wood, shipping palettes, and crates.
00:47
ornamental plants that escape can become invasive.
00:50
released pets can also become invasive species.
00:55
how do invasive species affect us?
00:60
they put human health and economies at risk: • their negative impacts on natural ecosystems cost multiple billions each year ‣ lots of our commercial, agricultural, and recreational activities are dependent on thriving native ecosystems • they carry and spread diseases
01:12
how do invasive species affect their ecosystem?
01:18
most commonly, the arrival triggers an imbalance in the food web -- whatever the species eats is now immediately threatened and its population decreases.
01:25
when invasive diseases carried in organisms arrive, they overtake targeted populations, often resulting in a large fraction dying.
01:33
the native species who ate the same food/prey as the invasive ones now have a heightened struggle for existence with a competitor that doesn’t naturally belong in the ecosystem.
01:41
sometimes, this results in the said prey going extinct. ( ex: the Guam broadbill in 1983 )
