Every butterfly goes through a process called metamorphosis.

Metamorphosis means transformation or change in shape.

Stage 1: Egg

A butterfly first lays several eggs on a plant. The plant will be used as a food source later on in the cycle.

Stage 2: Larva

This is also known as the caterpillar stage. In this stage the caterpillar eats in order to grow.

Stage 3: Pupa

After the caterpillar has grown enough it becomes a pupa which is also known as a chrysalis. During this stage a lot of change and growth happens inside the chrysalis.

Stage 4: Adult

Finally after weeks or months of growth, a butterfly emerges from the pupal case.
