The process of how a hydropower plant converts flowing water into energy is relatively simple. First, flowing water is caught inside a turbine. As the turbine spins, it is producing mechanical energy which is immediately transmitted to the generator. The generators role is to convert the mechanical energy into usable electrical power.
What makes hydropower special is the percent of energy you can produce from the total amount available. Where fossil fuel plants are only about 50% efficient, hydropower plants are 90% efficient which allows for more energy at a cleaner and faster rate.
