What is The Federalist Party?
00:22
The Federalist Party is a political party, some of the views that connect with Federalists include wanting a strong central government, believing in loose interpretation of the constitution, and wanting an economy based on shipping and manufacturing. Hamilton was a strong advocate for this party and his biggest desire was to have a national bank, he urged that it would facilitate the payment of taxes.

George Washington
00:39
Washington commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was the first President of the United States.
00:41
During his presidency he had Hamilton working for him as the secretary of the treasury. He also had Jefferson working for him as Secretary of State. He purposely had two people with opposing views working for him because they both had good views for the nation and hearing from both of their sides would make it so he could do what's best for the country. Washington didn't want there to be parties in the U.S. because he knew that this would create division and weaken the government.

Political Parties Helped Create Our Nation
01:29
The original political parties helped create our Nation as it is now. There were both Federalists as well as Democratic-Republicans creating the U.S. Constitution. Since the founding fathers had lots of different ideas of how the new nation should be, they had to compromise and they made sure everyone was happy with the outcome. This made it so the Constitution could be the best it possibly could be.

The Parties Have Divided Our Nation Throughout History
01:41
There was division due to political parties in The United States during the debate about a national bank in the 1790's, opinions on abortion, and opinions on slavery in the 1800's.
01:43
National bank- Alexander Hamilton (a Federalist) wanted a national bank in hopes of helping the payment of taxes. Thomas Jefferson (a Democratic-Republican) didn't want a national bank in fear it would create a financial monopoly. Abortion- Republican are against abortion due to the religious belief that aborting is killing a human, while Democrats believe it should be up to the mother whether or not they want to abort their child. Slavery- Democrats were pro slavery since slaves helped boost the economy by producing cheap labor, Republicans wanted to free the slaves because they found slavery an injustice act.
