- I Would Like to Describe
By Zbigniew Herbert
- 00:06
- I would like to describe the simplest emotion
- 00:09
- Joy or sadness
- 00:10
- but not as others do
- 00:12
- reaching for shafts of rain or sun
- 00:15
- I would like to describe a light
- 00:16
- which is being born in me
- 00:18
- but I know it does not resemble any
star
- 00:21
- for it is not so bright
- 00:22
- not so pure
- 00:23
- and is uncertain
- 00:26
- I would like to describe courage
- 00:27
- without dragging behind me a dusty lion
- 00:31
- and also anxiety
- 00:32
- without shaking a glass full of water
- 00:34
- to put it another way
- 00:36
- I would give all metaphors
- 00:38
- in return for one word
- 00:40
- drawn out of my breast like a rib
- 00:42
- for one word
- 00:43
- contained within the boundaries of my skin
- 00:46
- but apparently this is not possible
- 00:49
- and just to say - I love
- 00:51
- I run around like mad
- 00:53
- picking up handfuls of birds
- 00:55
- and my tenderness
- 00:56
- which after all is not made of water
- 00:58
- asks the water for a face
- 00:60
- and anger
- 01:01
- different from fire
- 01:03
- borrows from it
- 01:05
- a loquacious tongue
- 01:06
- so is blurred
- 01:07
- so is blurred in me
- 01:10
- what white-haired gentlemen
- 01:11
- separated once and for all
- 01:13
- and said
- 01:14
- this is the subject
- 01:16
- and this is the object
- 01:18
- we fall asleep
- 01:19
- with one hand under our head
- 01:21
- and with the other in a mound of planets
- 01:24
- our feet abandon us
- 01:26
- and taste the earth
- 01:27
- with their tiny roots
- 01:29
- which next morning
- 01:30
- we tear out painfully
