I wanted to take a piece of home with us
on our journey. I took them with us because
I wanted to do what my Mother couldn’t.
I was going to plant them and nurture them.
Their blossoming could be reminders of
where we came from. It would be ours to
love and care for. They made me feel
closer to my mother.

In all honesty, I truly do believe that I
will make it back to Rhode Island, yes. I
will prove to Sir Lockton that Ruth
and I have been granted our freedom
as said in Miss Mary Finch’s will. If I am
not granted a ship to sail, I will row a
boat myself to get back. Ruth and I will
make it back to Rhode Island if it’s the
last thing I do.
