These codes were made so that white people could get cheap
labor since slavery was abolished.
These codes soon became called Jim Crow Laws and it was a
derogatory term for blacks. Legislators segregated everything and Oklahoma
became the first state to even segregate phone booths.
(They segregated schools to residential areas to public
parks to theaters to pools to cemeteries, asylums,
jails and residential homes, there were separate waiting
rooms for whites and blacks in professional offices.)

It was a time during the 1917 through the 1970 and the African
American community
decided to move out of the south and to go towards the north.
Even in the north, they had signs all over that said “Whites Only.”
Things were also segregated up in the north as well.
Activists say that whites would be aggressive towards
black people when they would try to move into white communities.

During the reconstruction era, Andrew Johnson was the president of the
United States and wanted the African Americans to move forward in the community.
Some whites didn’t like this, so they reeked of habit on the blacks.
Much violence was on the rise and the black communities were in the line of fire,
they were the targets.
Much of the black community was destroyed because of this violence.
The most ruthless organization of the Jim Crow era, the Ku Klux Klan,
was born in 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee, as a private club for Confederate veterans.
This group went on to terrorizing the black community and seeping through
white culture.
