The Gayatri Mantra
00:23
The Gayatri mantra is one of the oldest available divine hymns. It is not to be chanted for the purpose of material gains. Its invocation concludes with an appeal to the Pure Consciousness to illumine our heart more. It is a prayer to the Self to unveil itself and come to manifest as pure wisdom in our life. It is called as Savitri mantra as it is dedicated to Savitri deity. It is in the Vedic-metre called Gayatri, which constitues three lines of eight syllables each.

Saint Visvamitra is the Seer of Gayatri mantra which is found in the third mandala of the Rgveda and also seen in Sukla Yajur and Krsna Yajur vedas. The mantra is chanted along with pranava and vyahrtis and means " We meditate upon the auspicious godly light of the Lord Sun; may that heavenly light illumine our thought-flow in our intellect." It is to be chanted as a prayer during the two sandhyas in a day, during the blending point of day and night but never at night after sunset.

The hosts of passionate animal instincts in the mind and body, are the sources of our activities in the world. These destroy the spiritual essence, the Brahman, the Sun in us. As a result, the essential brilliance of the human intellect gets clouded by these passions. Gayatri chanting along with its effects act like thunder and lightening descending upon them, to destroy them.

The studies in a Gurukul begin only after the Gayatri-diksha by the preceptor and it is considered as a second birth. In this the student is initiated into a new transformation in his subtle body. The first birth is the physical birth by the parents. The full Gayatri mantra has a fourth line, which invokes that which lies beyond the effulgence, leading to an intimate subjective experience of the devotee, his identity with it ' That is this ' or ' Paro Rajase Savadom '.

In the ancient days ladies used to chant Gayatri as freely as men. They used to learn the Vedas. So women too can and should chant the Gayatri mantra. The spiritual benefits acquired by the women folk are shared by the husbands, children, their families and the entire society. As a contrast the sadhana performed by men are their own.

Swami Chinmayananda says, " In our inner life the sun represents the light giver the illuminator of all experiences, the Atman. This, Pure Consciousness in us, the inner centre of our personality, around which the matter envelopments function with mathematical precision... just as around the Sun, the entire solar system revolves each planet at its appointed speed and each along its appointed path...is being invoked to shine more and more in our intellect ".
04:29
Without the Sun life would have been impossible... without the Atman the matter envelopments would be inert and dead.
04:44
Swami Chinmayananda says, Therefore, all that devotee means is " May my intellect be steady without agitation; may it be clean without the dirt of passions, may the light of Consciousness come to shine forth a brilliant beam of its radiance through my intellect." Thus, may my perception of the world be clearer, my discrimination subtler, and my judgements correct and quick, my comprehension of situations and beings be precise and wise ".
