There is a general misconception, that the higher the standard of living, the less should a man work in world outside. The highest standard of living would thus be, no work at all, maximum recreation, all sensual enjoyment, through out the year. Every one has this goal in life and are toiling to achieve it. If we want progress all around we must have a new philosophy of life.
01:19
Life can be considered as the fascinating power which expresses through all, the good and the bad, as this expression is common to all. It can be explained in terms of the dead. A dead body, doesn't perceive physically, feel emotionally and think intellectually. All the organs stop and the physical structure is not functioning. This is the case with all living organism: plant, animal and man. They do not respond to the world around.
01:59
Similarly, when an individual doesn't respond, if there is no activity, we can call it dead. So activity is the insignia of life. When we are living we have to be active. It can be said a person is doing nothing, when he is not doing anything useful for anybody. So his action should produce a fragrance like a flower, which spreads all around. He has to act in a manner that will bring happiness all around and a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction to himself. This is called "The art of action".
02:41
Actions vary from man to man. The type of work that we pour out can be classified under three different categories. The first kind is the labour. This is not the labour as we ordinarily understand. The philosophical meaning is the man, who is self-centered working only for the profit that comes to him. He works so that he may get his wages, only for the sake of pay, only for profit, he is called a labourer. This applies to all.
03:17
In the same work that a labourer is doing and in the same field there can be another man who is not a labourer at all. For eg. in a field where a man like Mahatma Gandhi is gaining the greatest achievement, in the same political field there can be another man who is only a labourer. It can be anybody. It applies to all. It is not the work which gives you the dignity and glory in society but it is how you do it and the attitude behind it.
03:57
The second category is the worker. We have the political worker, the social worker, the religious worker and so on. Why is he called a worker in contrast to the labourer? A worker wants to bring about something in the society. His eye is not on the profit. He wants success in the society. Every worker has a picture of an ideal heaven, a perfect society, or any thing like that. To the extent, the ideal is worked out in society, to that extent he is happy and feels successful.
