The sedlec ossuary is located in Sedlec, in the suburbs of Kutna hora

This is a wonderful gothic church, which is also known as the church of bones

This church began in the late 14th century

The abbot of the sedlec monastery brought back a lot of earth from a journey

he scattered the soil all over the sedlec cemetery. The soil was used for consecrating and healing

In spring of 1421 , Husstite troops attacked Sedlec and burned the cathedral.

at the end of the 15th century, the cemetery was somewhat reduced & bones were moved in the ossuary

Sedlec created because the plague caused many deaths of people. Many people went to the were buried in sedlec (all created idea of ossuary).

Purpose of ossuary was to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains.

Bone boxes are called ossuaries- families would bury people in shroud once flesh is rotting, ones would be collected and placed.

ossuaries are different today than they were back then- they do not require exhumation & reburial of bones. Instead, today Ossuaries consist of an above ground tomb/marker.
