Medical Trauma: When Healthcare Hurts

Medical trauma occurs when individuals experience psychological and physiological responses to pain, injury, serious illness, medical procedures, and frightening treatment experiences.
00:18
What kinds of situations cause medical trauma?
00:25
- Direct experience of a medical crisis (i.e. accident or acute illness)

Occurs in marginalized communities who have experienced a history of medical mistrust due to medical mistreatment, such as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ populations

Donald Edmondson proposed the Enduring Somatic Threat (EST) model, which outlines how medical trauma is different from other traumas. Medical trauma is enduring and stems from internal, rather than external, threat. It causes intrusive thoughts that are future-oriented instead of based on only past experience.
