When cold, molecules in the solid state are linked by strong bonds and vibrate in their positions!!

But when thermal energy is absorbed by the cold object, it is converted to internal energy, which consists of two types: kinetic and potential

Kinetic energy: Energy of movement of atoms.

Potential energy: Stored energy, which when increased, breaks bonds

Bonds between solid molecules weaken when some of them have absorbed potential energy; thus, the solid becomes malleable. The molecules break bonds and change into the liquid state once the majority of the molecules have absorbed a high relative potential energy.
