Post-operative vision loss: analysis of 587 patients undergoing endoscopic surgery for pituitary macroadenoma
00:02
Type of study:  retrospective, single centre
00:04
Duration: 2013 to 2018
00:06
Participants: 587
00:10
Background
00:13
Vision loss post-surgery is poorly understood
00:15
This study aimed to understand risk factors for vision loss
00:19
Methods
00:21
Medical records of all patients undergoing endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery were examined
00:23
2013 to 2018 at Mount Sinai Medical Centre
00:25
Patients with post-op reduced acuity, visual fields, new blurry vision were included
00:31
Results
00:33
11 out of 587 had post-op visual deterioration
00:35
All 11 patients had pre-existing deficits (average 13.1 months)
00:39
7 patients experienced deterioration within 24hrs of surgery
00:41
The other 4 experienced deterioration within 1 month
00:46
High rates of graft placement (10/11) and  opening of the diaphragm sellae (9/11) were found in this series.  These two may be important risk factors for post-op visual loss.
