Hello!
00:01
Today, I'll be talking about climate change!
00:03
The direct definition of climate change is "a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels."
00:07
In my research, I found that climate change is becoming more of a problem in our world.
00:09
In fact, climate change has been affecting our world!
00:12
Take the water cycle for example! Water is always moving; for water is in the atmosphere, ground, land, and the ocean!
00:14
Evaporation and precipitation are affected with the sudden uprising in climate change!
00:18
Some thing's we are expecting to see is; More rain and flooding: With more evaporation, there is more water in the air so storms can produce more intense rainfall events in some areas. This can cause flooding – a risk to the environment and human health.
00:23
More extreme drought: Warmer temperatures cause more evaporation, turning water into vapor in the air, and causing drought in some areas of the world. Places prone to drought are expected to become even drier over the next century. This is bad news for farmers who can expect fewer crops in these conditions
00:27
Stronger hurricanes: Warmer ocean surface waters can intensify hurricanes and tropical storms, leading to more hazardous conditions as these storms make landfall. Scientists continue to research how climate change affects the number of these storms, but we know that the storms will be powerful and destructive in the future
00:32
And finally, heat waves: It is likely that heat waves have become more common in more areas of the world
00:36
In brief, human activities (primarily the burning of fossil fuels) have fundamentally increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere, warming the planet. Natural drivers, without human intervention, would push our planet toward a cooling period
00:41
Now, you may be thinking, "How does Climate Change affect Us?"
00:44
00:44
The impacts of climate change include warming temperatures, changes in precipitation, increases in the frequency or intensity of some extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. These impacts threaten our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience.
00:49
The severity of these health risks will depend on the ability of public health and safety systems to address or prepare for these changing threats, as well as factors such as an individual's behavior, age, gender, and economic status.
00:54
Climate change impacts will vary based on a where a person lives, how sensitive they are to health threats, how much they are exposed to climate change impacts, and how well they and their community are able to adapt to change
00:59
Now, that's it for our lesson! Thank you for tuning in!
