Social media; the good, the bad and the ugly

Back in the late 90s, social media was first developed, but little did we know the huge impact and the bigger role it'd play for generations to come. From shaping the way every day people interact, determining how we view ourselves as a society, giving anyone with internet access a platform and a voice, setting up what we now view as our standard; social media has revolutionized the way human interaction works.

The way social media has impacted the world is outstanding in the present day; the world wouldn't spin in its axis without it. Lucky or unluckily for us, depending on how you want to see it, Gen Z was born with social media just a swipe away ever since we have living memory of it, and it definitely shows in contrast to our older generations. The way we commute as a generation as well as the world view we have is all very much thanks to social media.

Having access to the world wide web is most definitely our biggest blessing or our biggest curse; but how can it be?

The good: Having access to all the sites, information, and people in your life just through the touch of the screen is equal parts fascinating, practical and terrifying. Think about the amount of things you're able to do in your devices, and how reliable we are in them; specifically how reliable we are on social media. Without social media, it'd be very hard to contact a lot of people (specially from a distance), we wouldn't be as updated with what's happening around the globe, we couldnt look back at those e-memories we may have from 10 years ago from our facebook, there wouldn't be a platform for people who are willing to share anything regarding themselves, etc. But unfortunately, like most good things in life; this could be for the worse.

The bad: The famous warning of “once on the internet always on the internet” or in a much more formal term, digital permanence, is very much factual. No matter how much of an attempt or a desire you may have to delete something, it'll probably be in vain since (with the right steps) it's really easy to get that content back. And once posted on the internet, almost anyone can see whatever your posted content is like. Not only do they have access to that information, but with regular social media, it's really easy to contact you. You can never be too cautious about these things. Not to add the amount of misinformation you may find if hanging out the wrong places.

The ugly: As technology evolves, so have societal norms on what's wrong or right, in what's acceptable and what's not. With this, a level of unrealistic expectations can sometimes be set for us; from always looking beautiful and being in your best behavior, always being politically aware with no room for mistakes, having an insta-perfect or aesthetic lifestyle; if we let all of this get into our heads, it's most definitely going to impact us for the worse.
