Why should we wear helmets on a motorbike?
00:09
According to Michigan Auto Law
00:10
Motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die than other vehicles in a car crash
00:14
Helmets are successful in avoiding fatal accidents in motorbike drivers and riders by 37% and 41%, respectively.
00:14
Helmets were believed to have saved the life of 1,872 motorcyclists in 2017 and could have saved 749 more if all motorcyclists wore them.
00:20
What is the physics behind the injuries in a motorbike collision?
00:23
Let's learn a bit about velocity and impact force
00:27
The velocity of a motorbike is the rate of change in its position with a specific direction
00:28
For example, 75 km/h, 40 km/h
00:31
Impact force is the force that exerts from one object to another when they collide
00:37
The relationship between velocity and impact force is a direct relationship
00:37
When the velocity increase, the impact force will also increase
00:43
During a collision, depending on the velocity, not only the motorbike will be damaged, but also the body and especially the head will receive serious impact force, leading to serious injuries.
00:52
The orange car hit the blue car
00:54
Action force: from the orange car to the blue car
00:54
Reaction Force: from the blue car to the orange car
00:59
NEWTON'S THIRD LAW OF MOTION:
01:00
there’s always a pair of force acts on an object which called action-reaction force, they are equal in force, but opposite in direction.
01:04
If you increase your motorbike's velocity, its acceleration will also increase.
01:06
Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity
01:06
The larger the acceleration, the larger the action force and also the larger the reaction force, which is the impact force the motorbike and the people on it receive.
01:13
So, when you suddenly collide with a car, another motorbike, or any object, your body will always receive an impact force. The severity is based on your velocity.
01:20
However, without wearing a helmet, the brain may receive tissue injuries and traumatic brain injury. Unlike other body parts, the brain cannot heal on its own in a short time so that will lead to more serious long-term problems.
01:29
Wear a helmet!!
01:33
The brain will receive less amount of impact force during a motorcycle collision when we wear a helmet.
01:38
You never know what will happen next
01:44
Another important note to remember
01:46
Control and drive your motorbike carefully
01:49
And of course with a properly and securely worn helmet
01:53
Don't forget to remind your family and friends about wearing helmets to protect them from serious traumatic brain injuries.
