In the Good Lieutenant, The author depicts the awkward and confusing idea of love within war. This aspect of love is depicted in ways that come off as Fowler just doing her job, but I think there is something underneath the surface.
Let's look at how love is shown throughout the novel
Love is shown in 3 different ways
1. Pulowski and Fowler's relationship
2. Family relationship with her Brother Harris
3. The upbringing of love between Fowler and Beale
"Such as, if anybody complains about having beer-can chicken for dinner without coming out here to help you cook, I get to kick their ass" ( Terell, 245)
In the Novel, Fowler shows her romantic relationship with the character of Pulowski. It can be concluded that Fowler develops love for Pulowski by the way that she cares about them. Their actions at the end of the novel show that pulowski defends and protects Fowler.
" Who is this guy somebody's brother? Materson was fitting his body armor back on. When Fowler didn't respond he sighed. All right, have it your way, Lieutenant. we do these cache searches every day ( Terrell, 5).
Explanation of the quote
Fowler's ironic attraction to protect Beale within the novel shows an aspect of love. No matter how much Beale's character messes up and pushes fowler to the max, she finds a way to take care of him like she did with he brother Harris.
“ I just want you to promise me Emma, that you are capable of handling your brother. Of, uh, well, basically giving him some structure” ( Terell, 245-246).
The last aspect of love was between family. Fowler loved her brother dearly, and after their mom left Fowler had to care for him and teach him morals. This quote shows the other level of love that Fowler took on when she was younger and it helped to contribute to her character.
Fowlers's love triangle between relationships with Pulowski, the love between her family, and the unexpected love between Beale, all contribute to the theme of the novel and display Terell's true emotions through his characters.
