Tips on how to listen AND comprehend basic Spanish
00:08
Understandable.  The first time that most people listen to someone speaking regularly in a different language, it sounds like an avalanche of words-almost IMPOSSIBLE to understand.
00:13
But there is a way to make it easier!!
00:18
The first step is to quickly review the Spanish sounds that you were taught during the first week of class.
00:23
Why?
00:27
Because if your brain is expecting English sounds, it will get confused VERY quickly!
00:33
Take a few moments to review all the Spanish vowel sounds that are different than in English.
00:39
Okay-here is the next step to better comprehension: "Los cognatos"
00:42
Remember them from reading the book?  Words that look and (usually) mean the same thing in English as in Spanish.
00:43
Example:  'el teléfono' = the telephone
00:52
Let's see how it works for you: Listen to the short clip below and try to comprehend what the girl is telling you based on the 'cognatos' that she uses.
01:13
Did you get a general idea of what she was describing? Write down what you understood-we will share what we discovered as a group in a few minutes.
01:19
When you listen to native speakers, their accents will be different; their speed of speaking will vary-but they will ALL use 'cognatos' at some point.
01:25
Listen to this woman speak. After you have heard her, choose the quick quiz answer that MOST CLOSELY matches the topic that she discussed.
01:50
Was the topic....? a. Foods that she liked b. Where she liked to eat. c. Friends with whom she ate school lunch.
