Discussion - 6 Having listened to the advice of the intellect, brother concedes that different types of attachments are a hindrance in his inward growth and have to be sacrificed. He raises another doubt about his possessions which are very dear to him. Can he hold on to them? Intellect points out that in the domain of the Self there is no place for all these nor are they required. They are a hindrance in the experience of the Higher, hence they to are to be renounced.

Intellect helps brother to understand the correct nature of possessions. They are soaked with afflictions and sorrow. There is a great suffering in procuring them, also there is suffering in maintaining them as they keep deteriorating and require attention and care and there is constant fear of losing them as you do not know when they may be stolen. You get possessed by your possessions and constantly anxious for their safety.

Intellect stated the view of the wise people regarding possessions and asks brother, are you wiser than them? Intellect says there are two kinds of wealth. One gives immediate joy but is  replete with suffering and is temporary, the material wealth. The other is the inner wealth, which is true devotion. It takes time to cultivate, but is everlasting and is its own reward. Brother accepts the point and wants to know more about true devotion. Intellect explains, it is the love of Lord, who is the immutable Reality.
